The driver assistance system has a camera in a front area of a vehicle, whose vertical proximal detection area (4) is predetermined in the driving direction. A road surface (5) is detected at a distance from about 6 to 8 meters in front of the front end of vehicle. Another camera is provided in the front area of the vehicle to predetermine the vertical proximal detection area. A detection unit is provided for detecting the images of the two cameras, where the images are evaluated by an evaluation unit with respect to the lane markings (8) detected by the cameras. An independent claim is provided for a method for signaling lane change warning to driver or for automatic tracking of vehicle.
