The device has a sheet contact element e.g. suction ring (3.1) and brake band, driven by a sheet contact in fricative manner. A brake unit e.g. hysteresis brake and eddy current brake, is attached to the sheet contact element for adjustment of speed of the sheet contact element. Braking action of the brake unit is adjusted in continuous manner. The sheet contact element is firmly connected with a hysteresis disk (3.2). Permanently magnetized ring magnets (3.3, 3.4) are attached to the hysteresis disk, where position of the magnets is changed relative to each other. The brake unit is designed as a pneumatic blow nozzle arrangement. An independent claim is also included for a method for feeding a sheet in a sheet-processing machine.
