Polysaccharide (I) acid grafted with maleimide functionalized thioether group, where the grafting is functionalized by thiother unit (C), is new. Polysaccharide (I) acid grafted with maleimide functionalized thioether group, where the grafting is functionalized by thioether unit of formula (C), is new. n : 2-10; X : -CR1R2; R1, R2 : H, halo, linear, branched or cyclic 1-6C alkylene group, aryl group, or arylalkyl group; and R4 : at least one group comprising at least 1C. Independent claims are included for: (1) the preparation of (I); and (2) preparing an acid polysaccharide grafted with maleimide, comprising: (a) reacting an maleimide compound of formula (AA) with at least one acid polysaccharide comprising natural acid polysaccharide, neutral acid polysaccharide carrying unit having carboxylic acid group, preferably carboxymethyl group, in the presence of coupling agent, carbodimide and sodium 1-hydroxy-2,5-dioxo-pyrrolidine-3-sulfonate in a solvent comprising water, and/or aprotic polar solvents, preferably the aprotic polar solvent is dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and/or butanol, and (b) recovering the polysaccharide grafted with a unit comprising a maleimide.
