An air cleaning system 1 comprises means 25 for supporting air cleaning vegetation/plants, an inlet 11 permitting contaminant bearing air to flow from the ambient environment into the system 1, an air guide 3, 19 for directing air from the inlet 11 over the roots of the vegetation, a reservoir/store 7 for fluid, such as water and means 33 for supplying fluid from the store 7 to vegetation supported in the vegetation support means 25. The system may comprise a plurality of compartments, a first compartment 25 housing the plant/s, a second compartment defining the fluid store 7 and a third compartment into which the plant roots grow.
