PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a near-field illumination optical system that enables formation of near-field light having a desired intensity distribution and is high in utilization efficiency of a light energy, and to provide a near-field optical microscope and a near-field light formation method by use of the near-field illumination optical system.;SOLUTION: A near-field illumination optical system 101 comprises: a light source 102 that emits illumination light; a phase modulation element 104 that spatially modulates the illumination light emitted from the light source 102; and an ultra high frequency transfer medium 106 of which a dielectric constant or magnetic permeability indicates anisotropy and which can transfer near-field light. The ultra high frequency transfer medium 106 is arranged such that illumination light L modulated by the modulation element 104 is entered. The modulation element 104 modulates the spatially modulated illumination light such that the spatially modulated illumination light forms near-field light having a desired intensity distribution after the ultra high frequency transfer medium 106 is transferred.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
