PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a suction posture determining method and a device, capable of readily detecting the positional shift of a chip component sucked on a suction nozzle and a shift angle of the direction thereof.;SOLUTION: The suction posture determining method includes: analyzing the light receiving pattern of light receiving sections 2, 6 to detect each of right and left edge positions of a chip component T, obtaining a light shielding width of the chip component from the detected right and left edge positions of the chip component, obtaining the rotation angle of the nozzle at which the light shielding width becomes the minimum and the right and left edge positions from a change pattern of the light shielding width when the suction nozzle 3 is rotated using its axial center as the center, and obtaining the right and left edge positions when the nozzle is rotated by 90° and 180° using the rotation angle as a reference.
