PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for enhancing the strength of a sidewall of a seamed can end.;SOLUTION: A can end 10 has a sidewall 14 forming an angle in the range of about 12° to 15°. A seaming chuck 42 is inserted into the can end 10 adjacent its sidewall 14. The seaming chuck 42 has an upper wall 44 and a lower wall 46. The upper wall 44 is essentially cylindrical or slightly negatively tapered. The lower wall 46 is disposed at an angle very close to that of the sidewall 14 of the can end 10 so that the upper and lower chuck 42 sidewalls 44 and 46 form an obtuse angle in the range of about 162° to 168°. A can seamed using such a chuck 42 has a segmented, kinked sidewall comprising upper and lower substantially straight sections intersecting at a circumferentially extending crease and forming an obtuse angle.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
