PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rosin-modified phenolic resin which improves stain of printing plates and is excellent in temporal stability, and a rosin-modified phenolic resin for offset printing obtained using the resin. PSOLUTION: The rosin-modified phenolic resin is obtained by reacting purified rosins (a), a condensate of phenols and formaldehyde (b) and a polyol (c) and has a metal content of ≤10 ppm. The rosin-modified phenolic resin is obtained by reacting purified rosins (a), a condensate of phenols and formaldehyde (b), a polyol (c) and at least one chosen from a polybasic acid (d), an epoxy compound (e) and a polyfunctional acrylate (f) and has a metal content of ≤10 ppm.
