PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper width detecting method using a paper width detector in an optical system for accurately detecting the paper width of recording paper such as die-cut label paper having a label pasted on a transparent pasted board.;SOLUTION: A label printer 1 uses the paper width detector 29 for detecting a paper width while performing twice paper width detecting operation instead of once for scanning on a carrying passage A in the direction of the paper width. Furthermore, during first to second paper width detecting operations, the recording paper 12a is carried by a carrying distance L greater than a gap length Lb of an inter-label gap G and smaller than a label length La of each label 12c. Out of two positions on the left side of the first and second recording paper 12a, a position on the leftmost side is adopted.
