PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out dimming automatically and stably with high response speed whichever electronic scope is used. PSOLUTION: An automatic dimming processor is provided which comprises a light source for emitting illumination light, a diaphragm member for adjusting the light volume of the illumination light, an illumination light supply section for supplying the adjusted illumination light to an imaging apparatus, a brightness signal generating section for generating a brightness signal from an image signal from the imaging apparatus, a signal level converting section for converting the level of the generated brightness signal, a brightness value computing section for computing the brightness value of the image on the basis of the brightness signal whose level is converted, a target opening degree setting section for setting a target opening degree of the diaphragm on the basis of a difference between the computed brightness value and a predetermined reference brightness value, and a diaphragm operation control section for operating the diaphragm means toward the target opening degree at a speed corresponding to the difference, wherein the signal level converting section converts the level of the generated brightness signal at a conversion rate that matches the signal level.
