PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic stop device for a diesel engine 10 improved in restarting performance, and a control method for the same. PSOLUTION: The control method for the diesel engine 10 includes: a step of being transferred to an engine stop process in order to automatically stop the engine by stopping fuel supply when an automatic stop condition is satisfied; an automatic stop step of completely stopping the diesel engine 10 through the engine stop process; a step of restarting the engine by restarting the fuel supply when a restart condition is satisfied; and a step of performing the main injection of fuel into a cylinder at predetermined timing in the vicinity of a compression top dead center during the engine stop process and also performing post injection control for raising a temperature in the cylinder by performing at least single post injection during an expansion stroke after the main injection of fuel.
