PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a holding sealing material that can effectively prevent displacement in a width direction of each mat upon handling, can maintain high holding force of an exhaust gas treating body upon use as an exhaust gas purifying apparatus, and can prevent leakage of exhaust gases. PSOLUTION: The holding sealing material is composed of a plurality of mats comprising inorganic fibers, having a rectangular shape in a plan view, and being laminated, wherein a length of each of the plurality of mats in its longitudinal direction becomes longer sequentially as the mat is laminated, the plurality of mats are fixed to each other by a fixed portion that exists along a width direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the mats, and both end portions of the fixed portion are spaced apart from a longer side face of the mat.
