PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining clogging life of a fuel filter of an internal combustion engine accurately determining clogging life of the fuel filter disposed in fuel piping of the internal combustion engine by detected pressure of one pressure sensor disposed at a downstream side of the fuel filter; and the internal combustion engine using the method. PSOLUTION: In determination of clogging life of the fuel filter 14 disposed at the fuel piping 11 supplying fuel to a fuel injection nozzle 18 from a fuel tank 12, determination of the clogging life is not done if engine speed Ne is not greater than a predetermined first engine speed Ne, and a clogging life determination threshold Pc is calculated based on the engine speed Ne and delivery quantity Vp of a fuel pressurizing pump 16 and clogging life is determined if the engine speed is greater than the predetermined first engine speed Ne.
