The present invention relates to a peptide named Css54 (SEQ ID NO: 1), which comprises antibiotic activity against a range of microorganisms, 25 amino acids and a molecular weight of 2870.4 Daltons, and was isolated and purified from the venom of the scorpion Centruroides suffusus suffusus. The peptide of the invention may also be obtained by other means such as chemical synthesis or by a recombinant DNA technology. The Css54 peptide (SEQ ID NO: 1) is characterized by an alpha-linear secondary structure, which differs from the structure of other peptides, such as those having a beta sheet structure with disulfide bridges, similar to that of the beta-defensin group. The present invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising said peptide and optionally, a mixture thereof with commercial antibiotics such as kanamycin, streptomycin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide or Rifampicin.
