Disclosed is a method for predicting warp of a wood product produced from a log. The method includes performing a three dimensional scan of the log to obtain geometric data and, using the geometric data, constructing a log profile. The geometric data is partitioned into geometric components, one or more of which are removed from the geometric data to create one or more residual grid profiles. From the grid profiles, geometric statistics are derived and entered into a model for predicting warp of the wood product. The geometric statistics compose orientation dependent statistics.
