The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (2) in a part of a motor operation, where one of the cylinders (3) is inactive so that the drive torque is not produced. A positioning unit (12) of an outlet valve (7) of the inactive cylinder is controlled, so that the outlet valve is permanently closed. The positioning unit of an inlet valve (4) of the inactive cylinder is controlled, so that the inlet valve is partially opened during a working cycle of the inactive cylinder. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for checking a function of a control unit for an outlet valve of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine of a motor system; and (2) a computer program product with a program code for executing a checking method.
