Disclosed is a hand-held tensiometer for measuring the surface tension of liquids or the concentration of a substance in a liquid according to a bubble pressure method featuring an automatically controlled bubble life. Said tensiometer comprises a housing which is provided with at least one measuring capillary that is fastened thereto and additional optional sensors, operator's means and display means, a power supply, a gas source for producing bubbles on at least one measuring capillary, means for adjusting the bubble lives, means for measuring and regulating the gas volume flow introduced into the measuring capillary, an electronic/processor unit for controlling all internal processes, and means for storing data. The bubble life or a succession thereof is automatically regulated according to one or several predefined or permanent setpoint values by measuring and adjusting or measuring and regulating a gas volume flow.
