In one microcrystalline-silicon manufacturing method in the present invention, amorphous silicon containing at least 4 at.% hydrogen is exposed to a laser to form microcrystalline silicon therefrom, said microcrystalline silicon having a textured surface. This makes it possible to provide silicon having a high-haze optical confinement structure that is useful in solar cells and the like and contributes to simplifying the process of manufacturing solar cells and improving the performance thereof.
