This invention relates to production of sol-gel based spectrally selective surfaces, that is, coatings on metallic substrates, for harvesting solar thermal energy. More specifically, the invention relates to methods for producing various coating compositions, in which the sol-gel binder is an organic-inorganic hybrid and is made by a sol-gel process; and methods for application of the coating composition on various substrates in order to obtain surfaces exhibiting high solar absorptance and low thermal emittance; that is, surfaces with high spectral selectivity.
