The method involves receiving a footrest signal, and increasing return force (40) of a pedal lever by using an actuator in response to receiving the footrest signal. The return force is increased to a predefined increased return force (44), and the increased return force is reduced to normal force (42). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a controller for controlling an active accelerator pedal of a vehicle (2) a pedal system (3) a computer program comprising a set of instructions to execute a method for controlling an active accelerator pedal (4) a machine-readable medium comprising a set of instructions to execute a method for controlling an active accelerator pedal.
