PURPOSE: An engine start control system and a method of the hybrid vehicle are provided to provide stable cold start characteristics by dualrizing the engine start RPM according the temperature of a coolant, the temperature of a battery, and the charging status of a battery.;CONSTITUTION: An engine start control system of the hybrid vehicle comprises a battery in which high voltage in direct current for the operation of motor; a motor controller which controls the output torque and the velocity of motor according to the required output by converting the direct current of battery into the three phase indirect current; a battery monitoring device which controls the temperature of the battery and the state of charge; a vehicle information detection part which detects the start on request of engine and the temperature of cooling water; and a hybrid controller which controls the engine start-on by applying the map values that is set dualized according to the cooling temperature, the temperature of a battery and the state of battery charge once the start-on request of the engine is detected after the dualized setting of the engine start RPM into the first map value and the second map value. A hybrid controller controls the start-on of the engine applying the first map value to execute a stable start-on in the low output condition of battery if the engine start-on request is detected and the temperature of the cooling water or the battery satisfies the cold operating condition. The hybrid controller judges to be a cold start-on condition in case the temperature of the cooling water and the battery is detected to be below from -30 degree C to -25 degree C.
