PURPOSE: A manufacturing method of zirconium tetrachloride of high purity and a zirconium sponge is provided to prevent the contamination of zirconium tetrachloride in a second chloridation process and to prevent the generation of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide by generating zirconium tetrachloride using silicon tetrachloride which is the product of a first chloridation process.;CONSTITUTION: A manufacturing method of zirconium tetrachloride includes the steps of: obtaining zirconium tetrachloride and silicon tetrachloride by generating a reaction between zircon, petronium coke, and chlorine gas based on reaction formula 1, ZrSiO4 + 4C + 4Cl2 → ZrCl4 + SiCl4 + 4CO; obtaining zirconium oxychloride (ZOC) based on the zirconium tetrachloride, extracting the ZOC with a solvent, and collecting the ZOC; obtaining zirconia by plasticizing the ZOC; and obtaining zirconium tetrachloride by generating a reaction between the silicon tetrachloride and the zirconia based on reaction formula 2, ZrO2 + SiCl4 → ZrCl4 + SiO2.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2013
