PURPOSE: A method for producing ethanol using novel Saccharomyces cerevisiae KL17 isolated from soil is provided to ensure excellent cell growth and ethanol production effect. CONSTITUTION: A Saccharomyces cerevisiae KL17(deposit number KFCC 11493P) strain has high productivity of ethanol from galactose. The strain is derived from soil. 18s rDNA of the strain has a base of sequence number 1. A method for producing ethanol comprises: a step of culturing the strain, and a step of collecting ethanol from the strain culture liquid. The medium contains galactose as a carbon source.
