FIELD: metallurgy.;SUBSTANCE: molten magnesium chloride raw material is supplied to collecting cells of group of electrolysis units and electrolysis is carried out in electrolytic compartments with side input of cathodes and with upper input of anodes with copper current-conducting buses. Heat is removed from upper part of anodes by means of caissons with cooling agent circulating in a closed circuit. Then, cooling agent is cooled in a heat-exchange apparatus and returned to the closed circuit. Magnesium is extracted and gaseous chlorine is removed. First, cooling agent is supplied to a common circulating circuit of electrolysis units and added to systems in the form of a distiller with a tank-condenser-cooling supply line-heat exchange apparatus-cooling agent removal line. Closed circuits of each electrolysis unit are connected to common circulating circuit and cooling agent is circulated in common circulating circuit and in closed circuits. Cooling agent is successively passed via each half-pipe of the caisson in upward direction, first, on one side of the caisson of upper part of anode, then, in downward direction on the other side of caisson of upper part of anode and connected to the closed circuit. Distilled water is used as cooling agent. Increase in service life of group of electrolysis units, increase in service life of metal caissons, utilities and reduction of costs for equipment and materials for water cooling system is provided.;EFFECT: use of distilled water as cooling agent also allows reducing electric current losses since distilled water is non-electrically conductive.;6 cl, 3 dwg
