摘要

Magnesium metal assumes strategic importance to our country because of its essential requirement in the production of titanium sponge and zirconium sponge. Significant efforts have been put in for the development of magnesium electrolysis technology at Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory. Industrial scale R& D carried out on fused salt electrolysis of anhydrous magnesium chloride to produce magnesium metal earlier at DMRL is being revived and a pilot project is being set up by DAE to take forward the developmental works on a pilot plant scale towards developing the process for industrial scale implementation. The paper brings out salient features of DMRL technology and current status of the activity.
