The apparatus has evaluating device (CD) that is connected with surge arrester gas filled GDT for establishing impulse over voltage events through light measuring unit (OS1). The recognition device recognizes flowing current flowed by surge arrester gas filled GDT. The evaluating device determines whether the surge arrester gas filled GDT is operated based on recognized flowing current. The signaling device (OUT1) indicates whether the surge arrester gas filled GDT is operated and damaged. An independent claim is included for measuring unit.
