The device has a pressure area (11) which is provided in the transport path of band-shaped recording medium (10). A guide electrode (13) is extended over entire width of recording medium. A counter electrode (15) is provided opposite to the guide electrode. The electrodes are coupled to the control device. The control device is provided for generating the electrical field in response to the properties of recording medium such that recording medium is pressed against the guiding surface (14) of guide electrode. An independent claim is included for method for smoothing and stabilizing recording medium in ink jet print device.
