The device (10) has a roller cascade (12) with smooth-running rollers (22,24,26) in an input region (16), over which lateral surface of the recording medium is guided and whose counter torque acting on the recording medium is determined by the bearing friction. The roller cascade has brake rollers (32,34,36,38,40,42) in a working region (30), whose counter torque is such that only sticking friction is provided between the recording medium and the lateral surface of the brake rollers. The total counter-torque applied to the recording medium by the brake rollers is such that the pull-off strength lies within a predetermined force region after the rolling cascade for withdrawing the recording medium.
