The device has a controllable moving embossing head (10) that lies parallel in an x/y-plane to a wooden surface (21) and moved by a control unit. An end of a marking needle (1) is fixed in the embossing head that is projected in direction of the wooden surface. The marking needle has two ends that are opposite to each other, where a tip (2) of the marking needle is in the form of a truncated cone. The truncated cone comprises a conical distal surface that ends in a flat lid surface (3) and runs perpendicular to an axis of the marking needle. An independent claim is also included for a method for embossing lettering or markings in a wood surface.
