The sealing system comprises sealing element (50) having columns (56), pores (54), cracks and/or gaps. The sealing element is located in a sealed cavity. A separate heating element (68) located in or adjacent to sealing element is dimensioned, such that the temperature of the sealing element can be maintained independent of the temperature of medium (58) above the melting temperature of the medium. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a sealing system.
