The method involves reading a signal (165) which represents an information over a driving situation or a condition of a vehicle (100) or a position of the vehicle. The information is independent from a physical quantity with respect to a movement or dynamics of the vehicle. The minimum triggering level is changed for triggering the occupant protection unit in response to the signal. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a controller with units for executing a minimum triggering level changing method; and (2) a computer program product with program code.
