The method involves arranging a functional element (12) in a mold cavity of a forming tool, where the functional element includes a solid electrolyte layer (14) and functional layers. A ceramic material (24) is introduced i.e. injected, into the mold cavity, where the ceramic material contains a pore forming agent. The functional element is arranged at a side of a molded blank that is sintered. A porous molded body (20) e.g. carrier, is formed in sections, where the molded body forms a hollow body e.g. single closed tube, with an internal cavity (22). The functional layers are selected from a group consisting of an electrode (18), conductor, diffusion barrier, diffusion gap, reference gas channel, heating element (16), nernst and oxygen pump cells. An independent claim is also included for a sensor element.
