The vehicle is rolled in sailing mode, and the currently activated sailing mode is disabled (S6), when the current vehicle speed exceeds predetermined threshold value. The threshold value is set as the sum of minimum vehicle speed and the maximum allowable speed increase. Any time during the period of a currently active sailing mode, the minimum vehicle speed is defined as a function of the smallest vehicle speed, while immediately preceding the coherent time interval. The time interval is either the entire duration of straight activated sailing mode or the immediate past period.
