The energy storage system (10) has an electrical energy store (12) and a controllable switching device (50,52) for controllably connecting and disconnecting the energy store to and from an on-board network (positiveHV,negativeHV) of the vehicle. A structural unit (14) separately provided from energy store houses the controllable switching device together with a switching device which drives driving element. The structural unit has electrical terminals (30,32,38,40) for connecting structural unit with energy store and on-board network.
