The method involves measuring an electrical drive current flowing through an electric motor. A maximum current threshold value or a current threshold value band is determined for the electrical drive current based on a control variable, which is determined by a position controller. A movement of a mechanism (3) i.e. portal mechanism, is stopped in a direction driven by an electric motor when the electrical drive current reaches and/or exceeds the maximum determined current threshold value or when the current threshold value band is dropped out. An independent claim is also included for a coordinate measuring device.
