The operating method involves measuring the movement of a sensor or a workpiece support by flowing the electrical drive current (I-ist) through an electric motor to effect the movement of the electric motor. An actual-speed or an actual-acceleration of the sensor or the workpiece support are measured in a direction driven by the electric motor. A current limit value (I-max,I-min) or current limit band is determined for the electric drive current depending on the measured actual-speed or the measured actual-acceleration. An independent claim is included for a coordinate measuring machine for use with a mechanism for moving a sensor relative to a workpiece support in one direction.
