The method involves controlling a high-pressure pump (16) of an internal combustion engine such that fuel discharge of the internal combustion engine is controlled so that the combustion engine reaches a position in which a restart of the combustion engine is simplified. The high-pressure pump is controlled by a pressure regulation valve and/or a low-pressure system valve. Delays in a controlled system are considered by pilot control. Gas change compensation is transferred as compensation of speed- and position regulators by a pilot control of compensation moment. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for operating an internal combustion engine.
