An optoelectronic semiconductor chip (10) is specified with a semiconductor layer sequence (1) which has an active layer (1a) provided for generating radiation. The semiconductor chip (10) can be operated in a first operating mode (B1) and in a second operating mode (B2). In the first operating mode (B1), the semiconductor layer sequence (1) emits radiation, while the semiconductor layer sequence (1) does not emit radiation in the second operating mode (B2). The semiconductor layer sequence (1) is operated in the forward direction in the first operating mode (B1) and in the blocking direction in the second operating mode (B2). A display with a plurality of such semiconductor chips (10) and use as a motor vehicle headlight (100) are also specified.
