The method involves acquiring image data of a plant (1) with a camera (5), and detecting a surface of the plant. A portion of the to-be-irradiated surface of the plant is determined. A light source (3) is provided for selectively irradiating the to-be-irradiated portion of the plant surface. Automatic image recognition is carried out for detecting the plant surface or to-be-irradiated part on the plant surface. The irradiated part of the plant surface is a photosynthetically active area of the plant.
