A brake command signal (S1) is received, the target braking torques for each of the to-be-actuated wheel brakes (12-1,12-2) are determined, and the current status of the to-be-actuated wheel brake is determined, based on the conditions such as current brake temperature or current wheel speed. A brake pressure is determined prior to the initiation of braking of wheel brake, based on the stored functional dependence of applied brake torque of a state variable such as brake pressure, wheel speed or current brake temperature. The braking pressure of wheel brake is adjusted finally. An independent claim is included for a brake system.
