The method involves determining pressure produced in a working line (7) based on torque (M) applied by an internal combustion engine (2) i.e. diesel engine, and capacity of a hydraulic pump (5) in a control device (16) of a hydrostatic drive unit (3). The torque is determined by a control device (13) of the engine, and the torque is transmitted to the control device of the drive unit over a field bus (17) i.e. controller area network. Driving torque (Mf) applied by the drive unit is adjusted based on the torque, where the pressure is used to control the driving torque. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computing unit for executing a method for operating a hydrostatic drive unit (2) a drive system.
