The system (1) has a fuel cell stack (3) that is made of individual cells i.e. proton exchange membrane fuel cells, an anode chamber (5) and a cathode chamber (4). An auxiliary cell (16) is arranged, where a cathode chamber (17) of the auxiliary cell is connected with the anode chamber of the fuel cell stack. The auxiliary cell is connected to cathode chamber of the fuel cell stack or to an inside of housing that surrounds the fuel cell stack. An anode chamber (18) of the auxiliary cell is connected with hydrogen supply. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell system.
