Producing a metal cast strip, comprises: introducing a molten steel into a conveyor belt (2) with an upper- and a lower run circulating between two pulleys (3), and into side boundaries of a horizontal strip casting plant running with the conveyor belt, using a melting vessel (1); solidifying to form a support strip (5); and performing inline conditioning of the conveyor belt during rotating the conveyor belt to run the side boundaries along the upper run with the conveyor belt, and for conditioning the conveyor belt at the lower run or on the pulleys before, during or after the casting. An independent claim is also included for a plant for horizontal casting of metal strip, comprising a vessel containing the melt, which rotates over two pulleys; cooled conveyor belt with the upper- and the lower run; and side boundaries for producing the metal strip, which rotates with both sides of the conveyor belt. The side boundaries are formed as a horizontal belt or chain circulating only on the upper run, and as a horizontal or upstream recirculation. A device (6) is arranged on the bottom strand of the conveyor belt and/or the pulleys, for in-line conditioning of the conveyor belt.
