The method involves filling of a non-compressible mass (13) into a container (10) to a filling level, and inserting a plug (14) in a position above the filling level and out of contact with the mass. The plug is provided with a closable vent hole (24) closing the container. A container space (12) is evacuated above and below the plug under the extensive removal of the residual air. The vent hole of the plug is closed and the container space is vented above the plug. The plug is automatically positioned over the mass due to pressure difference on the sides of the plug.
