The system (1) has a spring brake actuator (20) that is designed as to operate in two stages. A brake valve (12) is provided for actuating a piston (27). The high speed of movement of piston is achieved in an initial stroke range by un-throttled reduction of control pressure in a control pressure chamber (29), if the piston is moved from disengaged position to an engaged position and if the electrical control of valve unit (30) is switched OFF. The low speed of movement of piston is achieved in final stroke range by throttled reduction of control pressure in control pressure chamber.
