The model structure has a flat base (14) with multiple models (15) of production equipments placed on the base. A surface section (16a,16b,16c,16d) is marked on the base by a mechanically readable carrier (17a,17b,17c,17d) of an information characteristic within the surface section. The information defining the shape of the surface section and the information defining the position of the information characteristic in the surface section is coded in each information characteristic. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a tool for marking surface sections on a surface; (2) a method for marking surface sections on a surface; and (3) a method for detecting a marked surface section of a surface.
