The method involves forming roller gaps (N1 to N9) between the rollers (3 to 12), and calendering the fibrous web (W) in the roller gaps. The fibrous web in a lower speed range is calendered in a less number of roller gaps than in a higher speed range of the fibrous web. The rollers of the roll stack (2) are moved apart for producing a less number of roller gaps, in which the fibrous web is calendered. The number of roller gaps is gradually reduced with decreasing speed of the fibrous web. The number of roller gaps is gradually increased with increasing speed of the fibrous web.
