The calender (1) has several successive rolls (3) exhibiting roll stack (2) and spreading rollers (4) arranged outside the roll stack. The rolls of the roll stack form several nips (N) for the passage of a fiber web (W) that orbit the spreading rollers. The distance of spreading roller from the roll stack is selected such that the distance of the fiber web between spreading roller and the nips before and after the spreading roller is equal to or integral multiples of the circumference of the spreading roller.
