The method (200) involves determining (210) an air mass in a combustion chamber based on an actual-valve lift by a function, which is based on parameters of sensors. A target-valve lift is determined (220) based on the determined air mass by another function, which is an inverse function of the former function. The actual-valve lift is controlled (225) based on the target-valve lift. Support points are determined by two-sided localization. A value corresponding to the air mass is determined by linear interpolation between support points. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product comprising instructions for performing a method for controlling an internal combustion engine (2) a control device.
