The system (20) has battery modules (17) comprising a battery cell (16) and switched in series between a load-side end (12) and a load-far end (10) of parallely connected strands (18). One of the battery modules is switched into series to the strands. The load-side end of the strands comprises an energy storage unit (15) that is switched in series to the battery modules. A fuse (6) and/or a switching unit (8) are switched in series to the battery modules in the strands and adapted to uncouple the strand or a portion of the strand from the parallely connected strands. The switching unit is designed as a contactor, a relay and a MOSFET. The energy storage unit is designed as an inductor.
